I’m team “find any way to save some money!” PERIOD!
I always feel like saving money and I know these tips work! Got a tip of your own? Put me on! And leave it in the comments below.
1. Do your laundry at a friend’s house.
I don’t have a washer and dryer in my apartment, and the ones downstairs ain't cheap! So I’ve started washing at a friend’s house instead. I can save my $10 worth of coins and me and the friend can get some quality, catch-up time. If you can, bring your own laundry detergent. You already using they water and heat - you can bring your own detergent now!
2. Does your job have free coffee? Well stop buying your own!
They have that there for a reason. That’s like somebody saying “Here! Save your $5” and you saying, “Hmm, nah! I’m good!” You trippin! Now it may not be your triple macchiato, espresso grande cup thing you fancy people get from Starbucks, but it’s free! And it’s something about free that just makes everything taste better. (Then on the weekend you can treat yourself to some Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts since you saved all week - see, we ain't gotta be THAT cheap, just cheap-er).
3. Exchange Streaming Logins
I know Netflix gon’ read this like, really?! But it’s true, I do this! Share your login with a friend to have one less bill! For example, I have Sling, it’s like cable but through an app, and my friend has the Apple Music family plan. When we exchanged logins I cancelled my Apple Music, now I’m down one bill but I still have both the services. To be honest, these companies got that bag, they’ll be alright! So start sharing those logins and saving that bread.
4. Turn A Night Out into A Night In
Me and my sorority sisters love to kick it! If we could go to dinner and get drinks every week, we would! But that can add up, so we kick it on a budget, in the house. Most times, three of us will bring a food item and the other two some wine. That way we can all get lit but not have to break the bank! Think about it, if we would've went to Bar Louie for example, that’s a good $30 individually right there (not including parking). Opposed to $5-$7 on one food item that we can cook and cheap wine (cheap wine is the best wine).
5. If Your Schedule Allows, Work From Home
God has blessed me with a job that lets me work from home time to time! I love not having to leave my apartment on snowy, cold Chicago mornings, but guess what I love even more? Saving this money! It costs me $5 a day to get to and from work. If I work from home four times a month, that’s $20 I can save. So I take advantage! And make sure to go super hard Monday-Thursday while I’m in the office and leave lighter items for Friday. My job still gets 100%, go hard or go home Jalyssa, and I get to work in my pajamas and save money. Everyone wins.
6. Stop Renting and Buy Your Own
I’m not talking about a home, I’m talking about equipment. If you’re renting equipment from a company you should think about buying your own! I was renting an XFinity router and was paying an additional $13 a month on my bill, when I could've bought my own for a one time fee of $100. These companies think they slick! But never underestimate the power of someone trying to save a dollar. I’m going to find out the loop holes, trust me!
7. Eat at Home!
You have food at home, stop giving these people your money! Now would I love to eat Chic-Fil-A everyday and not have to cook or wash dishes? Yes! But Chic-Fil-A already got that bag, I don’t! So I need to keep my coins and eat what’s already in the house. If you dread cooking it’s time to make it fun! When I cook I turn on music, I have concerts, I dance. Basically I’m getting hyped about the food I’m about to eat and the money I saved on cooking it! Anything to save a dollar.
8. Buy Reusable Bags
If you live in Chicago, then you know they charge us for everything from city stickers to street parking, and even bags! Seven cents for a bag in Chicago is a tad bit ridiculous because those cents add up! So next payday invest in some reusable bags. Keep them in your car so you’re always prepared and don’t have to give the city another dime of your hard earned money. If you’re fancy fancy, you can even get a cart!
9. Stop Buying Everything From One Store
I used to do this all the time, but I have seen the light! The old me hated going to multiple stores when running errands, so I would just go to Target or Walmart. They sell everything! They know that, we know that, and that’s how they get you. For example, you can get some plastic plates and bowls from Target for $2.50 but Dollar Tree has those same items for only $2. You may be thinking like “fifty cent, that’s all I’m going to save?” But let me tell you, those fifty cents add up! Plus how many times are you in Walmart or Target and you start picking up stuff you didn’t even need? Now you got an extra $20 on the bill because you just walking around getting distracted. Do yourself a favor and just make the extra trip to Dollar Tree. You’ll save money and just consider the extra trip more me time.
10. Last But Not Least - Save Those Receipts!
Surveys are the best thing since sliced bread! Not only are you able to give reviews on the service or food you just received, it usually comes with a perk. I am a frequent survey taker and I’ve gotten some pretty good deals from them. I’ve gotten a free two-piece and biscuit from Popeyes, 2 free sliders from White Castle, a free case of bread sticks from Pizza Hut (and that was just this past week). I say all that to say, you can take two minutes out of your day to give a review and get some free stuff. That offer can be your lunch for that day or breakfast for the next, Don’t miss your beat! Cause I’m gon eat!
